Summertime

So, I have to say that this was an extremely fun class and I will miss you all and the fun discussions we all had (despite it being 8 AM). I thought it might be fun to wrap up the blog with some ideas for summer reading. Any spare time I may have, I always have my nose in a book. In between working, taking online classes, tanning, vacationing/road-tripping I plan on reading A TON this summer. Here are some things I plan on reading (aside from checking out the Norton more!):

V. by Thomas Pynchon
Tell-All by Chuck Palahniuk
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larson (sp?)
The Beautiful and the Damned by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman
Walden by Henry David Thoreau (re-reading it!)
The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri

This is just a bit of my "To-read" book stack. Does anyone have any additional suggestions? Have you all read any of these? What is everyone else reading over the summer?

  1. This is such a good idea! I'm also hoping to read a lot this summer so it'll be great to see what other people suggest.

One of my goals this summer is to actually finish Steinbeck's Travels With Charlie...I started it last summer and never made it past the first few chapters. I really liked Grapes of Wrath when I had to read it in class so I figured I would try something else of his. Another author I want to explore more is Kurt Vonnegut. I've been meaning to read Mother Night this whole school year but never found the time.

As for suggestions I cannot say this one enough: read Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson! It honestly changed a lot of things for me, I wouldn't feel like the same person without it. Also if length is an issue Winesburg is really nice and easy to read because it's a compilation of short stories. Another suggestion would be About a Boy by Nick Hornby if you haven't read it already. I know there's a movie but as usual the book is much better. I read it last semester and couldn't put it down. Hornby just has a way with being honest.

That's all I can think of for now!

  2. I've been meaning to read Tennessee Williams for years and I think I'll go pick up a copy at a secondhand bookstore sometime soon. That reminds me, there's this great secondhand bookstore at Dupont on P and 20th I think, where I picked up a copy of Kafka's works for only 3 bucks. It was quite rewarding! (:

  3. Great idea Lauren. I'd suggest Unaccustomed Earth by Lahiri as well. It's a book of short stories, very good! Also, just read Walden a couple weeks ago, what a classic.

Merril, I will definitly pick up Winesburg Ohio, it sounds great.

I also want to read the new Oprah biography by Kitty Kelly!

  4. This summer, I am planning to begin a multi-year reading project: reading all of Proust's In Search of Lost Time.
