The caps are definitely warranted on this one, because I just realized that we discussed Judith Butler on the very same day that The Westboro Baptist Church was in town discussing Judith Butler!
I don't know how to reconcile all of this all of us being queer and all of us being made in God's image and all of us being hated by Jesus. Maybe we can use the comments section to do some theorizing?
Westboro takes religion to the extreme. I think it is incredibly ironic that they claim to be a religious (Christian I believe?) group, when their main message seems to be hate, rather than love and acceptance. So many stories in the Bible preach acceptance of the "other" and the rejected.
ReplyDeleteI am not queer. I really wanted to shout this out in class, but wanted to remain as neutral/unoffensive as possible. I think Butler takes gender roles to an extreme level by grouping all humans into her "queer" category. I am a female. I may not adhere to all the traits of females, but I doubt any woman does. I agree with her that gender roles are socially constructed, and hard to define but this doesn't mean that we should all be thrown into the completely indefinable category of "queer." Not a fan. I think it is a copout to gender studies.
MM,
ReplyDeleteI might be overplaying the we-are-all-queer bit, but I don't think that I'm off base in terms of Butler's general thesis. In the future, please shout. Loudly if you like. None of us have to buy into any of these arguments wholesale--or at all. Bring on the disagreement!
I find the Westboro Church to be absolutely revolting...but I am also ashamed that our media gives them so much attention. I think that if we just ignored them and their "message" then the world would be a better place. Thankfully, they represent only a small faction of Christianity and not the majority. (Yet, anyways)
ReplyDeleteLeave out the yet. The main tenets of Christianity are too strong for a radical group like Westboro to become the majority
ReplyDeleteI just find the Westboro Church an incredibly disturbing aspect of Christianity. As a Christian myself, it worries me that the Bible can be interpreted in such an awful way. That's all.
ReplyDeleteAs a fellow Christian, I agree! =)
