Our Generation
Our discussion today made me think about this article I had read in the New York Times. It talks about today's college students and how they use Business as a default major. It also discusses that students who are not in Ivy League business schools do not work hard at all--they are very lazy and do just enough to skate by through college. I thought this was pretty interesting, especially because at least four of my friends from home are potential/ current business majors.

This is really interesting! I also considered Business as a default major because I figured it would help me be successful later on in life, but my mother was a Business major and really disliked it and told me to do what I am passionate about...so I decided on English instead (and this article gives me comfort that I made the right choice). However, I feel like this sense of apathy could be applied to really any major nowadays that people choose not because they love it but because they "have to." I also was surprised to learn that Business is the default major...I thought it was Psychology now.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad that you brought up this article, Caitlin. I almost did so in class, but, in the midst of my strange attempts to affect a snooty sort-of British accent, I forgot.
ReplyDeleteOkay, this is inappropriate, but the semester's over, so whatevs. Check out this story. I don't know if it's an endorsement of the Business major or a condemnation of it.
ReplyDeleteI also wanted to add that I'm disheartened by the article Caitlin posted. It worries me because it's basically saying, at least to me, that the future business leaders of America won't really know what they're doing because they didn't take the time to study business.
ReplyDeleteProfessor Fisher, when was that article released? I can't believe that happened! That's even more disheartening to me...
I think this all happened quite recently, Sam. I haven't followed it too closely.
